THIS IS NOT A JOKE – I AM DEAD SERIOUS!

Hi perv,

The last time you visited a p0rnographic website with teens,
you downloaded and installed software I developed.

My program has turned on your camera and recorded
the process of your masturbation.

My software has also downloaded all your email contact lists
and a list of your friends on Facebook.

I have both the ‘Daniel.mp4′ with your masturbation
as well as a file with all your contacts on my hard drive.

You are very perverted!

If you want me to delete both the files and keep the secret,
you must send me Bitcoin payment. I give you 72 hours for payment.

If you don’t know how to send Bitcoins, visit Google.

Don’t Escape to the Desert Island Just Yet…

“There is nothing wrong with masturbating and we are not here to judge (we think it is healthy if it is not indulged in excessively!), but what we do not condone is the abuse of the features of bitcoin…”

If you’ve coincidentally had your pants down in front of your computer or laptop just before receiving these emails, you can breathe a sigh of relief and know that these emails are scams out to make victims believe that they were recorded whilst engaging in acts of self-pleasure and now held at ransom.

One tell-tale sign is that they will address you by your email address, and the video filename they purportedly have of you is the name part of your email address followed by the format .mp4.

So if your email address happens to be customersupport@photography-site.com, the video filename would be customersupport.mp4.

The scammer will also claim that they have all your contacts on your social media, even though the email address customersupport@photography-site.com was never used to register any social media account.

Of course, if the email is sent to your regular email address that is also used with your social media accounts, you can’t help but wonder if the risk is real. The perpetrator will usually portray himself as a hacker who knows what he is doing. Chances are, he is someone who only knows how to use email and make transactions with a bitcoin wallet. Don’t pack your bags, go off-grid, and leave your country just yet.

What Should You Do?

If you have received an email like the ones above, you may simply ignore or delete it without a second thought. Do not send the bitcoin that is asked.

We have found that some people have actually believed the email to be real and have made the payment. This article is to warn the public not to fall for these scams. Paying these scammers encourages them to continue with their scams and is damaging for the cryptocurrency industry as a whole.

There is nothing wrong with masturbating and we are not here to judge (we think it is healthy if it is not indulged in excessively!), but what we do not condone is the abuse of the features of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies (quick, pseudonymous cross-border payments) for scamming activities.

A Black Mirror Inspiration

When we first saw the 3rd episode of Season 3 of the British science fiction series Black Mirror titled Shut Up and Dance, we wondered how long it would take before someone decided to use the idea portrayed in the film and incorporated bitcoin into the act.

In that episode, a teenage boy was caught masturbating via his laptop camera in a manner very similarly described in this hi perv email scam, but instead of paying a ransom in bitcoin, he (and a host of other people involved) were made to commit acts against their wishes.

We’re not going to spoil the fun for you, and if you would like to see how it played out, you can watch it on Netflix.

Kenny, played by actor Alex Lawther becomes a victim of laptop camera spyware and is forced to commit acts against his wishes.

Moving On…

If you’re thinking of tracking the IP address to get the sender’s location, note that your email application probably will allow you to view that. However, those will only show you the IP address and location of the email servers at best.

What you could do, is report your incident to the Bitcoin Abuse Database at www.bitcoinabuse.com and record the wallet address of the ransomer on that site so that it is registered as an address belonging to a scammer.

And once you’ve done that, if you wish to have peace of mind in the future, have the camera or webcam of your computer or laptop taped up or covered.

The next iteration of the “Hi perv email scam” may just be more real, and demand for a whole lot more bitcoin. Stay safe!
