While Bitcoin may be the world’s first decentralised cryptocurrency which runs on a peer-to-peer network distributed across the world, it is not the only cryptocurrency in existence. At the start of 2017, there are some 1,500 different cryptocurrencies in use around the world, which are based on the open-source code of Bitcoin. These other cryptocurrencies are known as altcoins, or alternative coins.
The latest information on altcoins can be found at worldcoinindex.com. The site worldcoinindex.com provides data such as 24-hour highs, lows and volume, price charts, number of coins in circulation, and current market capitalisation.
